How to edit

From Reptpedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Mediawiki has made this very easy for us to use. For the most part it is free text, just type and the wiki will make it look right. I am learning what I can and cant do in this wiki and am not a pro but I will show you what I have learned so far and add more as I go. I am thinking the community will know more and add to this.

Contents

[edit] Basic Formatting

You will notice once you click edit that they gave us some tools like Bold, Italics and what they call "Level 2 Headline". You can use these buttons and work with it but if you are typing sometimes it is easier if you use basic keystrokes. Three single quotation marks (') on each side of the text you wish to make it bold, such as Reticulated Python would look like this Reticulated Python in edit. For Italics type two single quotations (') on either side of the text you wish to italicize, Ball Python would look like this Ball Python in edit. Level 2 headline which you will use often if you contribute often here and looks like

[edit] Reptster.com

is accomplished by using two equal signs on either side of the level 2 headline and would look like this ==Reptster.com== in edit. Once you add enough level 2 headlines the contents box will appear and users will be able to move from headline to headline just by clicking on the box.

[edit] Images

This is not so hard. First let me state that you have to upload your images to the reptpedia database. You can do this two ways:

1. You can click on the link that says upload file, pick the image you want to upload, name it and click upload. Once you get it in the database you can put the tag into Reptpedia wherever you want it by using the embedded image button in the edit mode or you can type this . There is more you can do with it but let me tell you about the second way to upload an image.

2. You can create the article you are working on inserting the phototags wherever you want with whatever name you think you will use like this . One you finish the article you can click "Save page" and the links will show up like this:

Image:What you may name it.jpg PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD A PHOTO IN THE LINK!!!

Once you click the link it will give you the option to upload a photo and will name it what you called it in the tag.

Now that you have the photos in the article you can manipulate them as to which side of the page you want it on, size, and caption. You can make it move to the right side of the page by adding the word "right" to the tag,you must seperate everything inside the tag with a pipe "|" the key above the "enter key" on your keyboard. It should look like this This would put the photo called cherryheadtortoise.jpg on the right side of the screen. You can replace the word "right" with "left" or "center" and it will move the photo accordingly. Now to size the picture add another pipe and the amount of pixels you wish the picture to occupy (ie. 300) followed by the lower case letters "px". For reference:

For reference this picture is 300 pixels
For reference this picture is 300 pixels
For reference this picture is 100 pixels
For reference this picture is 100 pixels

This would look like if it were right aligned. Ok now to add captions. The best way I have found is to make your image a thumbnail, I know what you are thinking, "I want it big", you can still specify the size with your "px" attribute. So add a "pipe" and put the lowercase word "thumb" in the tag and then at the end of the tag add another "pipe" and put in your "caption". so the photo to the right looks like this Take note of the caption in the pic. That photo is a thumbnail, right aligned, 300 pixels with the caption "For reference this picture is 300 pixels".

[edit] Internal Links

A great thing a bout a wiki is that it grows and grows and most articles are written off of other articles. Because of this the internal link is very useful. You can quickly link articles by pushing the "internal link" button in the edit screen or you can type the word with double brackets around it like this Burmese Python this would create the link Burmese Python. The page does not have to be created but if you make the link try and start the page you linked to.

[edit] Conclusion

This is a very basic start to what this software has available to us but with this you can make very nice articles. As we grow I am sure this will also. Enjoy the site!
